YENA - ˣ‿ˣ SMiLEY

YENA made her solo debut with her first mini album ˣ‿ˣ (SMiLEY), released on January 17, 2022, through Yuehua Entertainment. Following her time as a member of IZ*ONE, the South Korean singer introduced her own musical identity with a release built around optimism, individuality, and the power of a smile. Combining colourful pop sounds with a playful, energetic concept, SMiLEY highlights YENA’s bright personality while showcasing her abilities as a vocalist, rapper, and performer. The album’s cheerful message encourages listeners to face difficult moments with confidence and positivity.

The title track “SMILEY,” featuring BIBI, blends upbeat pop-rock influences with lively melodies and an infectious chorus, turning its message of resilience into a catchy K-pop anthem. In contrast, “Before Anyone Else” opens the mini album with a softer, heartfelt sound that expresses warmth and appreciation for the people who matter most. “LxxK 2 U” brings a sharper pop-rock edge, channeling frustration and emotional intensity, while “PRETTY BOYS” delivers a confident attitude through playful lyrics and an energetic arrangement. Closing track “VACAY” adds a breezy, feel-good mood, rounding out a five-song tracklist that balances YENA’s bubbly charm with more assertive and emotional sides of her artistry.

ˣ‿ˣ (SMiLEY) marked an important milestone in YENA’s career, establishing her as a solo artist with a distinctive sound and visual identity beyond her previous group activities. Her participation in writing and composing several tracks also helped introduce her creative direction, while the collaboration with BIBI added another memorable element to the title song. With its colourful concept, varied pop-rock and dance-pop influences, and uplifting message, SMiLEY remains a defining release for YENA and a strong introduction to her solo discography for K-pop fans.
