WINGS is the second Korean studio album by global K pop group BTS, released on October 10, 2016 through Big Hit Entertainment as a bold artistic statement following the The Most Beautiful Moment in Life era. The concept was inspired by Hermann Hesse’s novel Demian, exploring themes of temptation, growth, and choice as the members confront life’s challenges and transitions both individually and together. The album was promoted with the striking lead single Blood Sweat & Tears, showcasing BTS’s evolving sound and mature artistic direction.
The album features 15 tracks that blend hip hop, R B, dance pop, and K pop while highlighting each member’s talents, including solo songs like Begin, Lie, Stigma, and First Love alongside group performances like Blood Sweat & Tears, 21st Century Girl, and 2! 3!. This range of sounds and perspectives illustrates BTS’s versatility as performers and storytellers and deepens the emotional impact of the album’s themes.
WINGS received widespread commercial success and critical acclaim, becoming the best‑selling album in South Korea in 2016 and achieving record‑breaking milestones for BTS internationally. It debuted at number 26 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it at the time the highest‑charting K pop album on that chart, topped the World Albums chart, and saw Blood Sweat & Tears become the group’s first domestic number one on the Gaon Digital Chart. The album also entered the UK Official Albums Chart at number 62 and solidified BTS’s rising global presence with ARMY around the world.
