BTS WAKE UP is the first Japanese studio album by South Korean boy group BTS, released on December 24, 2014 through Pony Canyon in Japan. The album was issued in multiple editions including limited CD and DVD versions and served as BTS’s first full Japanese project following their early Japanese singles released earlier that year. Combining Japanese versions of previously released Korean songs with original Japanese material, WAKE UP represented an important step in BTS’s expansion into the Japanese music market during the early stages of their international career.

The album blends hip hop, pop rap, dance pop and emotional ballad influences that reflect BTS’s developing musical identity during their rookie era. Through energetic rap performances, melodic vocal sections and youthful production styles, WAKE UP explores themes of ambition, self discovery, youth and emotional struggle while balancing aggressive performance driven tracks with softer and more reflective moments. The inclusion of original Japanese songs also showcased BTS’s effort to connect more directly with Japanese listeners through localized storytelling and musical adaptation. 

WAKE UP achieved strong commercial reception in Japan, debuting within the top ranks of the Oricon Albums Chart and helping BTS steadily grow their Japanese fanbase before their worldwide breakthrough years later. Fans praised the album’s emotional energy and the group’s commitment to expanding their artistry internationally, while the project further established BTS as one of the most promising Korean acts entering the Japanese market during the mid 2010s. The release played an important role in laying the foundation for BTS’s later dominance across global music markets and deepened their connection with ARMY in Japan and beyond.
