YENA - SMARTPHONE

YENA released her second mini album, SMARTPHONE, on August 3, 2022, through Yuehua Entertainment, continuing to develop the playful and colourful musical identity introduced with her solo debut, ˣ‿ˣ (SMiLEY). Inspired by the everyday role of smartphones in modern life, the album draws parallels between digital connections, personal experiences, and the desire to find joy in ordinary moments. With its bright visuals, energetic pop sound, and video game-inspired elements, SMARTPHONE captures YENA’s youthful personality while presenting a confident evolution of her solo artistry.

The title track “SMARTPHONE” combines upbeat pop-rock instrumentation with lively melodies and a catchy chorus, using smartphone imagery to express the excitement of connecting with others and sharing everyday experiences. “Make U Smile” brings a warmer, more affectionate mood, highlighting the softer side of YENA’s vocals. “WithOrWithOut” adds a stronger rock influence and a more assertive attitude, while “Lemon-Aid” delivers refreshing, summery energy through its bright arrangement. The mini album closes with “U,” a more emotional track that balances the release’s playful atmosphere with a sense of sincerity. Together, the five songs showcase YENA’s range across cheerful pop, rock-inspired sounds, and heartfelt melodies.

SMARTPHONE helped reinforce YENA’s identity as a solo performer following her debut, pairing her expressive stage presence with a distinctive concept inspired by digital culture and gaming. The release’s colourful music video and energetic choreography further strengthened its playful aesthetic, while the varied tracklist demonstrated her ability to explore different moods without losing her signature brightness. For fans of YENA and K-pop, SMARTPHONE stands as an important early chapter in her solo career, combining catchy songwriting, lively production, and a relatable concept rooted in everyday life.
